Review: Alan Palmieri Bodybuilding Library Volume Number 1
|
This dynamic collection of 21 bodybuilding
courses and articles written by Alan Palmieri,
demonstrates once again why he is one of the
most underrated bodybuilding writers and
trainers we have. Compiled on a CD-ROM in
PDF format, this work brings together a free-
ranging batch of natural bodybuilding
instructional writings, which cover things as
varied as how to gain power and size, to how to
breathe, to why you should even bodybuild at
all. The author of this collection, Alan Palmieri,
has a history of over forty years as a
bodybuilder, trainer, and bodybuilding writer.
He has successfully trained hundreds of
people, and written numerous additional
articles, booklets, and courses, including his
renowned “Vince Gironda, Legend and Myth”
CD-ROM.

Some of the information in this collection may at first glance appear familiar or merely “old school” to
some bodybuilders, but often a deeper look will reveal Alan’s insights into even the most ordinary
information. In his chest development course, for example, Palmieri emphatically tells why the bench
press should not even be considered for the cornerstone of your program, and goes on to detail a
markedly different approach, with a uniquely fashioned routine and suggestions of how you can modify
even that. His “Horse Power,” a forty-plus page course on developing muscle size and power—still the
universal quest that bodybuilders everywhere share--contains a workout program which combines
elements of bodybuilding, power and strength training, even some Olympic lifting, which proves not only
tough but effective. The “Arms Report” course crams a highly-detailed four stage specialization workout
and tons of insights and tips, along with a diet to accompany the quest for arm mass, into twenty-six
pages. “Prime Cut,” his definition program (what else?), gives some twists to the cutting up workouts
that are, again, both unusual and effective, and he offers his insight into the demanding and often difficullt
dieting required. A calf specialization article reverses the heart of calf-training methodology in a mere
three pages. Highly original modification of long-standing routines abound in Palmieri’s work. Special
workouts for hard gainers or sticking points occupy another succinct course. And there is more, much
more. All offered up in Palmieri’s simple, elegant style, which is his own, loaded with insight.
Palmieri downplays his own instruction and advice, as he frequently states, in his
unpretentious style, his routines and advice aren’t entirely new, that there really “is nothing new” in
bodybuilding, and that his instruction is “not unique”. But he is too modest—as he goes on to quietly
disprove his own contention with page after page of startling insights, unique exercise applications,
original workouts, all woven together with the strong chord of honesty, and not just sound, but often sage,
advice. He tells his compelling personal story of beginning at a bodyweight of 87 pounds and building
himself up to 230 pounds of muscle and strength. He tells his story, as is his way, not to shine the
spotlight on himself, but to illustrate the principles of hard work and dedication, persistence, which he
lives and teaches, and to inspire others to know that they can do it too.
There is so much to treasure in this collection. The fifty page “Bodybuilding Bulletin” reads like a plain-
spoken, rapid-fire treatise on bodybuilding techniques, workouts, nutritional practices, that would take
less certain writers hundreds of pages to detail and explain—if they could—and if they even knew what it
its Palmieri knows. You’ll find a demanding special workout that will leave you in the “pit of the valley”
after the effort. Hear his explanation of the requirements for rep and set form, technique and tempo:
“Reps need to be performed in a smooth rhythm, almost like flowing water.” There. Got it? Even a
beginner might be able to grasp that ever-elusive, seemingly simple concept where they could not before.
Alan Plamieri has his bodybuilding principles, philosophies, and his themes, which run through this
material. He suggests over and over that the secrets are within us, that hard work, overcoming
setbacks, having the will to persevere will do far more for any bodybuilder than looking outward for some
quick fix, easy way that does not exist. Palmieri preaches not only about hard work, but teaches you how
to work hard. Change your routines, use good technique—build muscle, don’t just lift weights—
concentrate, spend as much time on nutrition as training, learn, experiment, grow, and find out—perhaps
most importantly—what works for you and what doesn’t. These things in themselves may not be unheard
of, but put in the context of this work, you may as a bodybuilder begin to understand these concepts and
their application much better, and for some, for the first time.
This is a rich collection worth having for any bodybuilder, filled with sound information, even wisdom.

Here’s what Alan Palmieri, the author of the Bodybuilding Library, has to say about his own work:
“A great amount of work related to bodybuilding today is complex, full of words and phrases so scientific most are not even listed in a regular household dictionary. You would need a special science or medical reference book just to understand what some authors are trying to say.
My books, courses and articles are written in an easy to understand style without the use of fifty-dollar words or complicated instructions. In fact, they are almost elementary compared to today’s standards of bodybuilding writing. Still, the information is as productive and intense as anything out there. In fact, I receive comments almost daily, as to the benefits and results people receive from the information contained in these materials.
My material is based on actual experiences—developed through trial and error— experimentation, reported simply, and delivered in honest direct fashion. Beginners to professional competitors have used and followed the information contained in this assortment of bodybuilding mateial and for many, discovered an entirely different way of training.”
